Still haven't finished the voodoo picture (I'm so slow!) but that's next on my list of things to do. Provided work stops scheduling me out the wazoo on what is supposed to be my last week of vacation. Bah.

First Custom Munny
So instead of art, this is what I've been doing over the last couple of weeks. Well, it's still art. Anywho! This is Deadpool, a custom Munny I made for my boyfriend for Christmas. For a first try, not too bad. I can't paint worth a darn so I'm pretty happy with how he came out.

That Voodoo You Do
It's been ages, I know. The new school year has started and I find myself with even less inspiration than usual (so in the negative percentile maybe? haha), which means I really haven't drawn much of anything. This is the first time this month I've actually picked up a pencil to draw. I've only sketched once or twice since September and those were nothing to write home about.
This is part of a belated art trade with my friend Suzux. She drew my character Fai all witchy-ish, and so I have drawn her character Aolani in return. She did a series of chibi portraits for a bunch of her friends, and in return we take one of her characters and witchify them. I decided to opt against going for the cute halloweeny witch that I've seen a few people do, and have gone the route of voodoo priestess instead. I make no claims of accuracy; Google was my reference source hah. My scanner is screwing everything up lately so the lines for her feet and whatnot came out very light. When I finish this I'll put the final version up for comparison.
Also, please enjoy this shitty corel paint sketch of a skull. With pointy teeth. I've never actually tried to draw an even remotely anatomically correct skull before, so yeah. Not awful, not great. MEH, I SAY. MEH.
auf widershen! Till the next oh 3 months or so goes by haha.

Work Doodle
So for a holiday, work was especially, terribly boring, since about 85% of the attendance was during the day shift, and I didn't have to work till evening. Maybe 250 people. Maybe. Over 5 or so hours, it was torturous. To keep my brain from exploding, I drew this dude on the back of an old flier. We keep them for scrap paper, and whatnot. This was done in mechanical pencil, but curiously it scanned green. I'm not sure if it's because of the lousy paper quality or the colors on the reverse side of the flier or what, but I've darkened the hue to purple so he can be seen better.

To keep off further boredom, I fabricated a few details about this charming looking guy.
Eugene Potts
Age 34
Height 6'5"
Weight 250 lbs
*Insomniac
*Received a head injury at the age of 25 which caused permanent damage in the logic & reasoning centers of his brain
*Has an inexplicable fear of taxis and bare feet
*Mild Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Is a counter
*Rarely shows any emotion other than indifference
*Has a soft spot for clowns, will kill mimes on sight
....And that's it. Whoo?

Playing catch-up, again
Soo I have once again managed to demonstrate how terrible I am at keeping this thing updated. Rather than blab on and on about this or that keeping me distracted, suffice it to say I've been very busy. On to the pics! (Blogger seems to be having trouble uploading the files today, so I'll just thumbnail my deviantart links for now)
First, the 4 prints I did for the Gypsy Faire on Aug. 16

Spring by *zek-chan on deviantART

Summer by *zek-chan on deviantART

Fall by *zek-chan on deviantART

Winter by *zek-chan on deviantART
The rest:

Keerazy by *zek-chan on deviantART

Sneak Preview by *zek-chan on deviantART
The first one's just an ID cause I got bored with the old one. The second is an image I started working on back in April, and now I can go back to it, since all my other illustration work and stuff is out of the way. Of course, finding my tablet pen helped immensely with that, haha. There should be an image of Beetlejuice too, but DA doesn't have blog access for scraps and Blogger is still being petulant, so I'm just going to make you all wait. (Or you could just view my DA gallery and click on the 'scrapbook' tag).
Till next time! (whenever that happens to be)

Chicken's no good when there are no opponents

Haha I'm pretty terrible at keeping this updated. I've been working (very slowly) on the prints I'll be selling at the faire in a few weeks. I haven't even started on my solo yet (it terrifies me).
These two are Hiram and Juniper, I haven't drawn them in ages but they're fairly new to my menagerie. <3

Finally Finished/A Decision to be Made
First things first, the gypsy dancer is done. All in all took about 10 hours over several days to color. I used Copic Markers, Copic Opaque White, Copic Multi-liners (for inking), Prisma Color Pencils & Markers, and some Prisma Color gold & silver paint markers. As to the decision that needs to be made, it's a big one (for me, at least). This image will be used on a poster for an upcoming Gypsy Faire I'm taking part in on August 16th in Riverside, MA. My belly dancing troupe the Goddess Coyle is hosting, and there will be a lot of performances to see, as well as vendors to buy shiny things from, and also henna done by the lovely heather.
Not only am I expected to do a solo (I'm terrified of this, I've only been dancing for about 9 months), but my class is delighted with my art and demands to know why I'm not doing a lovely series of drawings and things to sell at the faire. To that end, my own laziness could be my downfall, and I well know it. But the idea has been planted in my head, and now I'm thinking about doing possible stationary packets or post cards, that way I can do a minimum amount of pictures but apply them to a number of different things. Perhaps stickers, or buttons? I'd have to get a button maker, but those are relatively cheap. This would also be a lovely way for me to earn some extra money, which is a large factor in my decision. I am dead, flat-ass broke right now and extra cash would be extremely welcome.
The thing that scares me the most, I think, is failure. It makes me think of the con and all the various tables in the artist's alley and how I'll have to compete with a lot of other people just to maybe sell something. Then worries about how my art will look next to the art of others starts trickling into my awareness, and everything sort of just snowballs. On the other hand, if I do go through with this, perhaps I can recruit a couple of my non-dancer friends to help me run the booth, that way when I'm performing/etc. there'll be someone to watch the stuff. Vendors get in for free, so all money that's made is a profit for me, and dancers get in free as well so I would be doubly-unworried about having to pay admission. Whoever helps me at the booth would presumably get in free as well.
Hmm. I've had an idea. Dave, I know you've expressed interest in coming to watch me dance, so would you like to help me run the booth, if I have one? You'd get in for free, and maybe we could also sell some prints of your mermaids! If I know my girls, they love the kind of pretty ladies you draw. :) Something to think about.
As more information becomes available, I'll let all of you know. But opinions on whether or not I should even try this would be welcome!

Long time no see
It's been a couple weeks, oops. I have various excuses, including work, and just generally being lazy, and actually having something resembling a social life, which is odd for me haha.
I'm working on the gypsy right now, and this is my progress...
Nowhere near done yet. I'd say maybe 35% at this point? I still have more flats to add (obviously), pencil overlays to do, some embellishments with Testor paint, etc. So far it's been transferred to Bristol Board via lightbox, and inked, and the details have at least been fleshed out. Her feet got fixed, too. Although I liked them better when they were reversed, this'll have to do.
So yeah. WHEEEEEEEEE. And stuff. Back to work now.

Last minute addition
My friend Didi's birthday is this summer, and she wants to have a bellydancing/gypsy party super shindig of sorts. So of course, I get inspired to draw an hour before I have to leave for work.
This is being posted so I can save my progress before I probably kill this dead with my suckage, haha.

Whee? And now, off to work!
EDIT: Maaaaaaan. I was so excited about how this was coming out, and how her feet looked so awesome (because I SUCK at feet)...and then I realized that her awesome feet were backwards. Well shit. Gotta fix that, haha.

Pompadour Pontification
I'm a sucker for alliteration, lately. I blame Tokyo Times for that, since the author alliterates EVERYTHING. Jeez.
But this is Elliott.

Things about Elliott (yes, two 't's):
I smudged this pulling it off the scanner, because I shaded it to death with my pencil. So now he's all finger-printy and smoodged, and it's annoying. But he's preserved here so mreh.
Things I love about Elliott: His hair, his JAWLINE (omg sexy haha), those goggles, and his sideburns.
He's supposed to be wearing a welder's apron. With a muscle shirt under it. It doesn't look anything like that. Oh well.
But this is Elliott.

Things about Elliott (yes, two 't's):
- Welds for a living
- Blind in his right eye
- Very bawdy personality
- Loves dirty magazines/humor
- Overly protective of his hair (who wouldn't be, with a 'do that magnificent?)
- Customized goggles that snap open at the side, so he doesn't have to pull them over his hair

Pitiful
Some new things. But not an entirely impressive amount of stuff. I'd like to make you all think I've been busy...(who am I kidding? You all? No one reads this, haha). I haven't been especially busy, but I have had to work, and enjoy the first few days of my summer vacation by doing a lot of nothing, followed by a lot of shopping.

Did these over doodles from another day. Well the dude at the top, at least. I've noticed I have a habit of drawing random eyes when I'm lacking inspiration. I tried drawing the box of pirate band-aids I have, but they got covered up by a rather large newsboy cap. That rather fetching gentleman with the bumpy nose and caveman jawline started out as just a nose. The rest of him grew from that magnificent schnoz. I have a thing lately for drawing bumpy, stubby noses. I like them. The lollypop isn't a tattoo, it was in the way and I didn't bother erasing it. The guy on the bottom is me trying to draw a more muscly, burly type guy. I'm also trying to get a feel for this guy's character, as I'm doing a collab of sorts with a friend, and he's our main focus. It's not quite right here. But it's getting there. His mouth is a bit too large, but I adore his exaggerated chin and absolute indifference. He sees you, and he's not impressed, haha.
This last one is born of a meme I've run across many times and have been too lazy to do a thing about. You're supposed to draw yourself in what you're wearing, right at that moment, using only one layer.

Fabulous, isn't it? Peejays. An old holey skate shirt and a pair of fleecy pants donated by my mother, because they're too long in the legs for her. I didn't draw in my glasses or bathrobe because I wasn't thinking about it...but I did include my lovely 2 am hair and irritated squiggly line for you all.
I'm so thoughtful.

More already.....?
Two this time, oh wow. We'll see if this keeps up...*shifty eyes*
First is a continuation of the age meme, I felt slightly guilty doing 5 years ago instead of 10, so I went ahead and did a quick sketch of me at 11. It's so sad, haha. I was an awkward kid.

I did this one a couple weeks ago but was too lazy to scan it. Random dude, playing target practice with pigeons. I like the pose, it's pretty ambitious, for me...even if the anatomy is terrible (no references!). In case you can't read his text, it says "Hah. Dirty pigeons." Don't ask where that chain is coming from, it's magical I tells ya! I may keep him as a character, he's the mischievous type that I tend to have a liking for. If he had a name, it would probably be Keith. He seems like a Keith. We'll see....

Ohhh and I wanted to add that the photo in my header is one my mom took. She was helping me get photos for a texture set for my digital photography class, since at the time I was overwhelmed with things to do. That's pretty much my favorite picture right now. I did some creative cropping and layer screens and made it my header! I rather like it. :)

Fresh Start
Oh no, you're all saying. Kristina's made another sketch journal. Well this one is an art blog (it sounds slightly less silly and much more pretentious, which is how we artists are supposed to be, or so I hear). I've deleted my old livejournal sketch account, because it was going unused and quite frankly the username was a character I created when I went through my weeaboo phase, and I'm trying to grow away from that.
My intentions are to improve (which I would hope was quite obvious given the blog title) and to begin sketching daily throughout the summer, since I won't be in school. To get the ball rolling, I finally opened up that pad of marker paper I bought at the convention from the Copics people. Rather than draw something meaningful of course, I've hopped onto a bandwagon and done a meme. Oh well.

There are plenty of errors, I'm not especially worried about them. And I cheated on the meme. It's essentially "You as a teen vs. You as an adult." The versions I've seen have all consisted of a 10-year difference, but I'd have been 11 and not counted as a teen if I did it this way. So I compared myself in 2003 to myself now. There's enough of a difference that it works, I think.
The marker paper is marvelous. I got a funky texture for the sweatshirt when I layered grey on the frontside and a dark blue on the back, and blushing skin is much easier. It didn't work as well on the actual figures, but the ear looks almost exactly as I wanted it to, as far as the coloring goes. Now if I could sit still long enough to do the work required for my finals, I'd be in business.
We'll see if I can keep this blogging thing up! :)
